Frequently Asked Questions
Can I polish out scratches?
Yes, using our maintenance kit made for us by Novus you can refinish your deck and or hull. Some scratches may require more aggressive wet sand prior to using the Novus System. See the McGuire’s website and product to review what the best product for your application is.
Note: Never use strong solvents such as acetone or lacquer thinners on your kayak as these can seriously damage the finish of your boat.
Can I paint my kayak?
Yes, actually you can paint the kayak with something as simple as plastic furniture spray paint (Krylon, etc) or bring the kayak to a body shop to get the professionals to use quality automotive paints.
Can I glue-in holders for an under deck bag?
Yes, using the proper Plastic Welder or Plastic Weld adhesive you can glue most parts to the underside of the deck.

Can I mount GPS holders?

Can I mount Fishing rod holders?
Yes, certain holders require re-enforcing as in permanent band aid reinforcing . Doubling the thickness of the plastic ensures a secure installation for a rod holder. Plastic for this project can be acquired from your local dealer.
Can I mount net holders?
Nets of large length and size are not advised to be secured on the deck of a kayak in a traditional method. Smaller nets can be placed in net/rod holders as mentioned in the previous question regarding mounting fishing rod holders.
Can I reinforce areas of the deck and or hull?
Yes, simply apply the Plastic Welder adhesive to the area you wish to reinforce and place the plastic cut to size on top of the adhesive. Secure it in place for the specified time as indicated on the instructions of the adhesive. Remember the area must be clean and dry prior to use of the adhesive. In Canada use Permatex made Plastic Weld which is sold in the automotive section of Canadian Tire.

In the USA, use the same product made by Devcon called Plastic Welder - hardware stores such as ACE Hardware stock it.

It comes in a 25ml dual epoxy like syringe that you squeeze out a 50/50 mix of material.
How do I store my kayak for long periods of time?
Storage of your kayak is simply a function of supporting the kayak on or near the bulkheads. Place the kayak upside down or right side up with supports on or near the bulkheads. Before you store the kayak ensure you have inspected and cleaned sand and gravel underneath the seat and in the side seat tracks.

Ensure both knobs securing the seat front and seat back have lubrication and are clean from debris. Apply a simple coat of wax to the deck and interior or apply Protectant 303 or a Mcnett product prior to storage.
How do I store my Kayak?
Store your kayak right side up or upside down with appropriate supports place on or near the bulkheads. If storing outside place a cover over the kayak to keep it clean. Cover the cockpit with an authentic Delta Kayak cockpit cover to keep debris and animals out.
Is a Delta Kayak construction stronger than Fiberglass?
We deduce that the characteristics of our kayaks make it as strong as or stronger than a standard glass boat. In saying that some F/G boats are made very well, they may have reinforcing and extra layers of material to make them very durable. This of course will make the kayak heavier and one must consider the UV strengths of our thermoformed kayak verses the Polyester resins that do not stand up to the suns rays to the same degree as our Solarkote.
Is Delta Kayaks environmentally friendly?
Yes, consideration for the environment is a major part of our philosophy at Delta Kayaks. While you are enjoying your kayak in the outdoors, you can be confident in the knowledge that Delta Kayaks are made from materials and construction methods that tread lightly on our planet. Unlike the construction of composite kayaks, which release free styrenes and harmful emissions during processing, the thermoformed materials used to make Delta Kayaks are safe to manufacture and are completely recyclable.
Is the Solarkote the best protection against U.V. for a kayak?
Yes, Solarkote currently is the best protection any manufacture uses on the surface of the kayak. Delta Kayaks is the only manufacture using Solarkote in the manufacturing process of Thermoforming kayaks.
Should I lubricate my foot pedals and seat tracks?
No, lubrication attracts sand and debris causing a negative effect in the operational function of the foot pedal. At the most you could apply the Protectant 303 or the comparable McNett product to assist in keeping the area of the inside of the cockpit clean and protected.
What happens if I have a problem with my kayak?
Should you encounter a problem with the kayak please contact your local dealer for assistance. The retail location will walk you through the process on correcting the problem. Should you wish to email Delta Kayaks we of course are always willing to answer any questions you may have.
What is the best protection for my kayak?
A simple non abrasive wax will work or spray on Protectant 303 or a similar McNett Product.
What can I use to clean my boat?
For general cleaning use soap and water. You may wax your kayak to facilitate periodic washing but isn't necessary. To remove grease, oil or tree sap use Isopropyl Alcohol (rubbing alcohol) or Varsol for stubborn spots but use sparingly.
Note: Never use strong solvents such as acetone or lacquer thinners on your kayak as these can seriously damage the finish of your boat.
What is the best way to transport my kayak?
Transportation of the kayak can be facilitated with the proper gear.

Purchasing four 1” x 12’ straps with a proper cam lock buckle can make life easy when securing the kayak on the roof of your vehicle. Rope can be used as a good substitute. By using proper saddles or J Cradles you can facilitate transportation of your kayak as seen in the Thule roof rack website. Foam blocks also can be a good substitute. Ensure the front and the rear of the kayak is secure enough that it does not wiggle from side to side and pay attention that you do not over tighten to the point of stressing the kayak to abnormal shapes. Typically the rear strap is attached on or close to the rear bulkhead of the kayak. Attach a bow and stern line to your vehicle to secure the kayak in the event of emergency braking or heavy headwinds. Apply one of our cockpit covers to decrease wind resistance and to keep the cockpit clean from debris
